Tie rod ends: inner and outer

Tie rods connect the steering rack to the steering knuckles. The outer tie rod end bolts to the knuckle with a tapered stud. The inner tie rod threads into the rack under the rubber bellows boot. Worn tie rods cause loose or wandering steering, a clunk when turning at low speed, and uneven wear on the inner or outer edge of the tire. This category lists BOXI inner and outer tie rod ends and kits sold by Tetron Auto Parts. Match year, make, model, side and inner or outer, then verify fitment. Plan an alignment the same day you replace any tie rod. Steps for outer ends are in our outer tie rod DIY guide. For clunks, compare with ball joint vs tie rod end.

FAQ

Inner vs outer tie rod: what is the difference?

The outer tie rod end sits at the wheel and is usually the easier DIY job. The inner tie rod connects to the steering rack behind a rubber boot and often needs an inner tie rod tool. Some kits include both.

How can I tell if a tie rod end is bad?

With the front safely raised and supported on stands, grab the tire at 9 and 3 o’clock and rock it. Play you can see at the tie rod joint, a torn boot, or a clunk when turning at low speed suggests a worn tie rod.

Do I need an alignment after replacing tie rods?

Yes. Replacing a tie rod changes toe. Count the turns when you remove the old part to get close, then get a professional alignment the same day.

What if the tie rod nut keeps spinning?

The tapered stud is turning in the knuckle. Push the stud up into the taper to seat it, or hold it with a hex bit in the stud end if it has one, then tighten to the service manual torque.
